CANTICLE 58
PERFORMED BY THE CALVARY METHODIST JNR CHOIR ACCRA
CANTICLES have been a part of the Worship of many Churches for years even though some have dropped them in favour of other 'modern' musical trends.
Many Ghana Methodist Congregations have kept them and still would sing the 'Venite' or 'Te Deum' as part of every Divine Service. Indeed at a time there used to be sang three Canticles in each Divine Service.
These Canticles are Scriptural verses put to music and beautifully rendered often joyfully by rote in praise of God. Many of the older members of our Church, lettered or otherwise, cherish these Canticles and would sing them during and after Service often as they would the Hymns.
The Canticle rendered here in Psalm 122 which among others admonishes us to 'Pray for the peace of Jerusalem' with the promise that 'They shall prosper that love thee [ Jerusalem]'.
